What is Jiu Jitsu
There are many more people who would get involved if they knew the answer to "What is Jiu Jitsu?".
When most people are considering a Martial art for themselves or their children, some of the styles that would spring to mind are Karate, Judo, Kund Fu and Tae Kwon Do.
Most parents who have never been involved would go to any one of these arts without knowing what to expect or what they are getting themselves into.
A small amount of research would be very sensible.
Don't just sign up with a club because it's 5 minutes from the house, but go there because it is the most suitable choice for your child and it satisfies all of the criteria that you lay out.
Okay, so what is Jiu Jitsu? Let's keep this explanation short and in simple terms so everyone has at least an idea of what I'm talking about.
The term literally translated means "Gentle Art" and this is a huge misconception. The techniques are very effective to say the least.
The term JuJutsu was first used in the 1600's. The protectos of very prominent people in Japan would use techniques to discreetly deal with situations quickly and effectively without causing too much of a commotion.
Offenders would be removed very quickly.
Variations of Style - There are many different styles and each one has it's own bias towards either Competition, Self Defense or Tradition. Choose the type that suits byour needs most.
There are many similar techniques and each of the styles will implement the them in the most suitable way.
What type of techniques would I learn? - You will learn a wide variety of topics, ranging through the following - Targeting and Striking
- Ground Defense
- Escape Techniques
- Takedowns and Throws
- Hold-downs and Submissions
- Defense against weapons
- Pressure Points
You should really do your due dillgence and go watch a few classes, speak to the Instructor, watch the students in the class train. Find out if they are geared towards competition or modern self defense.
Who can do this? - Anyone, regardless of size and shape. Men, Women and children.
Techniques help a person to take advantage of an attackers size, momentum and anatomy.
The techniques that you learn will be adjusted to suit you. Everyone is a little different with variations on height, weight, strength and so on. It begins to make sense that each person could have a slight variation to techniques to make it the most effective for them.
What else is Jiu Jitsu? - It's a potentially lifelong Art that you can become involved with at any age and to any degree. You will learn some great skills, some great information and make many friends.
Next time some asks you "What is Jiu Jitsu?", you should have a vague idea.
