Welcome to the latest Jiu Jitsu Calgary Newsletter.
April has brought about many well needed changes to the club
Firstly, the additions to the Junior Program. This is really going help inspire and motivate Junior Students. Some of the new features are really going to help the students in a very big way. I’m really looking forward to getting underway with it.
To increase the readability I will send out a printable version of this Newsletter in .pdf format. I will also have some Paper Copies at the Dojo. Many people will find it easier to read on paper.
We have already added new Little Samurai and Junior Class times and are about to add another adult training day.
The current schedule looks like this -
Little Samurai - Sundays 2pm and 3pm
Juniors 1 - Monday 6pm and Wednesday 6pm
Juniors 2 - Friday 6pm and Sunday 4pm
Adults - Mon 7pm, Wed 7pm, Fri 7pm, Sunday 5pm
We are also adding many new Fitness Classes to our schedule, outside of the regular Jiu Jitsu times.
There are many more events planned for This Semester, We have added Birthday Parties to our list of planned events, so any parents interested in that, then let me know asap to make sure your date is still available.
It’s all exciting stuff. I’m really enjoying helping students set and strive to reach new goals.
Please do not hesitate to contact me directly with any questions or concerns.
Best Regards
Sensei Malcolm Bale
Victoria Day
This is the next Holiday in May that will effect classes. The only day classes will not be held is on the Sunday 17th May.
Adult Technical Training Session
There are 3 available for this Semester where we will cover each and every technique for a specific level in a single session
- Orange Belt Curriculum
- Green Belt Curriculum
- Blue Belt Curriculum
The 1st session - Orange Belt is organized
Saturday 9th May at 10am
I will provide information on the other 2 as the time approaches.
Keep your eyes and ears open on information about other events happening. We have a specialized clinic from by an outside Instructor in the very near future too.
Ultimate Body-shaping Course
Our Adult Class has been experiencing a 30 minute Fitness Session right after the Jiu Jitsu Class, it has become very popular too.
The good news is that this is going to be available to many more people in the very near future.
A 10 week Fitness Program, classes will be held 6 days per week, twice per day so there is plenty to choose from.
The fat busting, body shaping course utilises basic punching and kicking techniques, Resistance Training and helps you to follow a simple, yet very healthy Nutrition Program. These are all very essential elements of a successful health and Fitness Program.
During the next few weeks, we are running through the Program with some adult Jiu Jitsu Members. If you would like to be one of those members to reap the benefits then let me know asap.
This Fitness Course will then be made available to anyone else at the start of the next Semester.
Grading
Wow it feels like we have only just started back and we are already talking of a Grading. To give plenty of warning, the Grading will be held on the last weekend of June:
Adults - Saturday 27th June - 10am (Yellow) and 12pm (Orange and Above)
Juniors - Sunday 28th June - 4pm
Little Samurai - Sunday 28th June - 2pm and 3pm
The last Grading was excellent; it really shows when students have made the extra effort. If there was any area that was a bit lacking, then that was the theoretical knowledge amongst the majority of adults, it is all available in the Curriculum Manuals. Be sure to read through this information that you have access to.
Camp of Combat Arts
We need to hear back from anyone who is intending to attend the Camp in July. It is always an excellent event and we are lucky to have it held right here in Calgary.
There are classes available for adults, there are sessions available to Juniors and if enough parents express an interest, there will be a session for the little samurai too.
The training sessions are taking place at Southland Leisure Centre on Saturday 4th and 5th of July. It will be a great weekend of Training. Sessions will be available for Adults and this year we are introducing a Kids Camp too.
There is no obligation for you to go out to the Campsite, during that weekend, however, there will be people out there.
At this event, you have the opportunity to join in Jiu Jitsu Training sessions from many excellent Instructors from throughout Canada.
I will be sending out a separate e-mail, with details of a page where you can show your interest. Be sure to register your details when it arrives and you will receive all the necessary information.
It’s a great opportunity to experience other aspects of Martial Arts and to experience Instructors offering an alternative approach.
Kids Movie Day
These classes are organised to give the kids an additional opportunity for fun in the Dojo. This will help to make a better connection for them to keep up their attendance for many years to come.
The Kids Movie Day gives us an opportunity to teach some additional skills, as well as to get them actively involved in some related physical and fun activities.
This is also an opportunity for your kids to bring their Buddies along to join in the Fun.
We would like to keep this as a regular event but obviously, we will only make these activities available, as long as parents are showing an interest in their children attending them.
The next Kids Movie Day will be held at the end on May 30th.
Time 3pm - 5:30pm
Junior Leaders and Black Belt Club Members will be meeting prior to the Movie at 2pm
Junior Leaders
We are now ready to start the program. This Saturday is the first training session where we will be filming the Students demonstrating their Jiu Jitsu Techniques, ready to upload into their Members Site.
I will also be providing information for the other 2 additional training sessions of the Semester.
It’s all very exciting, the kids are going to love it and the parents very impressed by the kids renewed enthusiasm and development.
The Kids will be moving through several stages :
- Juniors This is the basic Junior Program
- Junior Leaders When the Juniors are ready to show focus and Commitment
- Black Belt Club For Juniors to follow the adult Curriculum in a Junior environment
- Masters Club For Juniors who reach have reached Black Belt Standard
These levels of training are a very necessary addition to the Junior Program. It is essential to keep the Juniors motivated and inspired and this staged development is one of the best methods to ensure that happens.
We will continue to help students to make continual progress through the stripe system. Those small increments add up to massive improvements over time.
We continue to add additional assistant Instructors to the team.
Kids Birthday Parties
Kids Birthday Parties are now available with first offers going out to current Students and Parents.

Free Self Defense Courses
INVITE YOUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS or even come along yourself.
One of the areas that I really believe in, is making Free Self Defense Courses available to the public. Not everyone wants or needs to attend training sessions 2,3,4 and 5 times per week like many of us do.
Some people just want a confidence-boosting, couple of hours course. We make these available to anyone inside and outside the club, every month as a minimum.
This course is available to members and Parents as well as the general public so do please feel free to pass this information on to others.
We also hold courses for Companies and Organisations and although there is a small fee for them, they make excellent team-building events that provide some essential knowledge and skills to their members.
We make Free Self Defense Courses available throughout Calgary so be sure to let people know about them or even attend one yourself if you have not done so already:
The next Free Self Defense Course will be held on Saturday May 16th, Feel Free to forewarn friends and family as there are only limited spaces available.
Who knows, just one snippet of information from everything taught during the Course just may make a difference at some time in the future.
