Technical Training

admin | February 18, 2009

This Week I am organising a Technical Training Session for Coloured Belts. This upcoming session will specifically cover Green Belt Curriculum.

I will be covering each and every technique in the Curriculum which will take 1.5 to 2 hours. There is no cost for this extra training, just adding even more value to your Membership and to help prepare students for Gradings which will be held at the end of March.

You will undoubtedly find this session to be very beneficial.

I can only make these sessions available as long as there is enough interest to justify the additional time and effort. Sessions for other Belt levels will be held over the coming weeks to, these will be available to adult students who are Grading for that level or are already above that level.

Remember that a firm knowledge and understanding of the lower belt levels will help to create a solid foundation for your Jiu Jitsu.

Date - Saturday 21st February

Time - 10am - 12am

Sparring Session

admin | February 18, 2009

Our Next Clinic will cover Sparring, it is an introductory session that is suitable for all of our adult students members. Certainly nothing for anyone to worry about.

Date - Saturday 28th February, 2009 from 10am - 12:30 pm

This will be a very well controlled session, we’ll go through some sparring drills. There will also be some time allocated to Bag Work and Pad Work.

This is an essential area of training that all students will benefit from. Great for improving your fitness too.

There is no cost for this additional training, however, there will be some protective gear required. We do have some sparring gear available

It is advised that students do start to collect their own sets together, the equipment we have as the moment is new but as you see the gallons of sweat that can come into contact with such items may be the incentive you need to start acquiring Gloves, Head Guard, Foot Protectors, Groin Protector, Mouth Guard, Hand Wraps etc.

For this upcoming session, I would advise you acquire a mouthguard and handwraps as minimum.

If you would like to attend, please fill-in the form below.

I look forward to seeing you there.

Masters Jiu Jitsu Program

admin | February 17, 2009

The Masters JIu Jitsu Program, for anyone who is not aware is intended for our more mature students starting out in Jiu Jitsu or Students with potential injury concerns.

It has come to my attention recently that more students should be following the Masters Jiu Jitsu Program. It had been created to help you respect and preserve your body.

Some minor niggling and unnecessary injuries are creeping in and these can be avoided.

There is no secret to the fact that our bodies take longer to heal as we grow older and getting injuries in training is totally counter productive to achieving your goals. Most students attend classes to learn Self Defense, improve fitness, improve mental health and so on. When you receive an injury (which could have been avoided) it simply sets you back. If you continue to take 1 step forwards and 2 backwards, your progress can be set back quite some way.

The levels have the exact same value as the regular Jiu Jitsu Program. The Program is very slightly modified to help you respect your body. There is absolutely no need for you to be thrown around.

You will notice that the Grading, tests you in performing Techniques and not on the way you are thrown. There is still a great need to practice the Breakfall drills and rolls.

I should not have to enforce this in class, it is up to you to make that wise decision to step aside when necessary.

Lets concentrate on learning the Jiu Jitsu Techniques, getting our body and mind fitter and stronger and let the younger students worry about the breakfalls and being thrown around.

If you would like to take a closer look at this Curriculum, there are several manuals available. Just let me know.

New students need to exercise caution too, there is no rush for you to be thrown either, there is a learning curve that you need to go through and plenty of time to do it.

February 2009 Newsletter

admin | February 3, 2009

Welcome to the latest Jiu Jitsu Calgary Newsletter.
Can you believe it’s February already, it feels like January has gone by in a flash. Let’s get our heads down as before we know it, February and March will fly by too and Gradings will be upon us again. In the meantime, enjoy the classes and the additional events that we have in store for you.
As you can see, I have changed the format of the initial e-mail Newsletter to something a bit more appealing to the eye, making it easier to read.
The Jiu Jitsu School is growing very steadily and I am very aware that class size can be a concern from time to time but rest assured, I am keeping a very close eye on class statistics and as soon as there is some consistency in attendance, I will make additional classes available.
There is plenty going on at the club so be sure to keep you eyes on the events listed and if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me directly.
Best Regards

Kids Classes

There is so much to be gained by kids attending Martial Arts Classes and I really hope that parents recognise the true benefits that extend far beyond learning Self Defense and establishing a bit of additional confidence.

Some of the values gained through Martial Arts will not only be a great help through School and home but will last a lifetime.
If there are aspects of training that you feel strongly about, whether it ’s something you like or dislike then please feel free to contact me.  We need your feedback so we can continue helping students growing in the right direction.
You will see that we repeatedly help the students begin to understand some important words such as Discipline, Self Discipline, Respect, Focus and Concentration. By helping them understand such virtues, they become much more than important words.
It was great to be part of the Story on CBC News that was emphasizing the fact that structured programs like Martial Arts can really help teenage kids throughout the course of their lives.

Family Day Weekend

There will be NO CLASSES on Sunday 15th February. Classes will still be held as normal on the Friday and Monday.

Just letting everyone know in plenty of time.

Adult and Kids Gradings

Both Adult and Kids Gradings will be held during the last weekend of March. Specific details will be posted soon.

Adult Technical Training Session

Available to Coloured Belts Only -

In order to help students prepare for Gradings, I am organising a technical Training session where this coming session, we will be concentrating strictly on Orange Belt Curriculum.

This is another extra, to add value to your Jiu-Jitsu Calgary membership.

We will cover each and every Orange Belt Technique. Other Belt Levels will be covered in future weeks.

Visit the page and let me know via the Comments section at the bottom of it, if you will be attending

Training Clinics

There are many Training Clinics lined up for adult students to attend. Anyone who attended January’s Kicking clinic will tell you that there was so much information covered that was enjoyable, practical and a great benefit.
Future months will bring in other events to broaden your knowledge and skills.

This is just the beginning, there will be many clinics made available to help students experience different aspects of Martial Arts and to help them develop in the Art of Jiu Jitsu.

I truly believe that we are training is the best system around but it’s a benefit to all of us to bring in a specialist in their particular field.
Clinics will cover many aspects of Martial Arts Training from very specific elements of our Art and also include areas that we do not normally have the opportunity to cover.
Keep your eyes on the site as details to the next Training Clinic will soon be posted.

Kids Movie Day

These classes are organised to give the kids an additional opportunity for fun in the Dojo. This will help to make a better connection for them to keep up their attendance for many years to come.

The Kids Movie Day gives us an opportunity to teach some additional skills, as well as to get them actively involved in some related physical and fun activities.

We would like to keep this as a regular event but obviously, we will only make these activities available, as long as parents are showing an interest in their children attending them.

Membership Site

This is a great tool for anyone who is really interested in progressing with their Jiu Jitsu. We have recorded every single technique in the curriculum and have started making them available through this membership website.Literally hundreds of hours of effort have already been poured into making this available.

Every Technique will be available in a video format, as well as descriptions and pictures to hep you better understand the application of each and every technique.

The site is still young but it will grow continue to grow as a constant source of reference for Jiu Jitsu Techniques, Training, Fitness and general development. A few students are test driving the site at the moment and enjoying the benefits in doing so.

Kids Movie Day - February

admin | February 1, 2009

The Kids Movie and Training Day is much more than just watching a Movie.

I’m sure you’ll agree, It is essential to include bags of fun in the kids training sessions and these additional events gives us an opportunity to do just that.

We are organising a high energy fun training session, followed by a fun Gladiator Style competition to really keep the kids highly motivated about training.

It’s an opportunity to bring Buddies along and have some fun with them.

We’re helping to build confidence by encouraging the kids to speak out in a group, we helping to build friendships by creating a fun atmosphere.

It’s good for the kids to attend the Dojo for fun events to help them see it for much more than attending classes and learning curriculum.

Keep Kids Motivated

Yes Martial Arts is about Discipline, Self Discipline, Respect, Focus, Concentration, Safety, Awareness and so on but to keep them motivated, we have to include as much fun as possible.
